So, is it safe to travel to Punta Cana?

What is considered safe nowadays? No country is immune to violence. Some places are going to be more dangerous than others, that’s a fact. But you can always take precautions and help prevent these by doing some research before your trip.

The Dominican Republic is one of the most visited Caribbean islands. It’s well established for tourists, people are very, very used to foreigners, and a lot of locals speak English. All-in-all, Punta Cana is a safe place to travel to. Dominicans are nothing but kind, generous, and contagiously happy people. It’s definitely a country you shouldn’t neglect traveling to.

At the end of the day, it’s all about how you travel, and we’d recommend you to do it in a smart way.

Millions of people travel to Punta Cana every year. Here at Canablue, we believe it’s important that people challenge the things that they hear and see in the media and experience the places and things for themselves.

It’s always good to be cautious and we wish more people would explore Punta Cana and its surroundings instead of limiting themselves to the resorts. There’s so much more to see than just the commercialized places. In our blog you can find, for example, DON’T BE FOOLED, PUNTA CANA IS WAY MORE THAN ‘FUN IN THE SUN’.

Here are 10 general travel safety tips to decrease any chances of mishaps:

  1. Change your money at banks or official money exchange places – anything else is not recommended at all.
  2. Leave valuables at the hotel or condo.
  3. Ladies (and men), wear cross-body purses with zippers to prevent robbers from pickpocketing.
  4. Keep your belongings close.
  5. Avoid walking in public areas by yourself at night. If possible, travel with a group.
  6. Don’t resist if you get robbed – this can unfortunately happen. If it DOES happen, hand over your valuables.
  7. Don’t give out too many details about yourself or where you’re staying with strangers.
  8. When using an ATM, guard the keypad when entering your pin and be aware of your surroundings.
  9. Walk confidently – anything you can do to look less like a tourist is going to lessen the risk to your safety.
  10. Don’t accept drinks from strangers, know where they come from.

So whilst there is a lot to keep in mind when you travel to the Dominican Republic, most visits to here are trouble-free. Plenty of tourists love it for good reasons.

Follow your gut and avoid getting into bad situations. Knowing what to do in a natural disaster will help, too. Do these and you will have a great time without worrying!
